STUDENTS from Coventry University’s (CU) faculty in the seaside town of Scarborough are tripping the light fantastic at the renowned Stephen Joseph Theatre.
The show Sammy the Shoemaker’s Impossible Day, includes third year students who are studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree in acting.
As part of the university’s collaboration with the theatre, the students have completed pre-Christmas rehearsals ahead of the show, which is written and directed by Cheryl Govan.
The show is described as a festive mix of both fun and of the importance of friendship, particularly during difficult times.
Over the years, CU Scarborough, has developed strong ties with the town theatre and participating in the production gives the students a chance to work closely with stage professionals while at the same time, providing them with vital industry experience.
Last year ten students performed in the Christmas production of the theatre’s The Giant Who Had It All (And Then Lost It…).

Paul Robinson, the artistic director at the Stephen Joseph Theatre explained: “We’ve been working with these students throughout their three year acting degree and are thrilled to see the results. We hope they’ve learned as much from us as we have from them.”
Diana Logan, course leader at CU Scarborough said: “The university and the theatre designed the BA acting degree to be industry relevant, focused and career driven.
“This is a very exciting course where staff and students come together to create something special, exploring all areas for employability within industry.
“We are very proud of this collaboration and the experience our students have whilst training on the beautiful Yorkshire Coast.”
Aside from learning acting skills, students are also introduced to business concepts including marketing, budgeting and entrepreneurship, in order to ensure that graduates are able to market themselves as professionals.
Sammy, the Shoemaker’s Impossible Day runs until December 23, is aimed at children aged under 6.
