Mirfield Charity Issues New Year Challenge: “Don’t Just Make Resolutions, Make A Real Difference”

“Our volunteers don’t just help, they shape futures”
January 14, 2026

As charities across the UK face declining volunteer numbers, Northorpe Hall Child + Family Trust is urging local people to turn good intentions into a meaningful difference for young people across Kirklees.

Volunteers are at the heart of organisations like Northorpe Hall, yet in the UK only one in three adults volunteer regularly - leaving many charities struggling to meet the needs of those they support.

“Our volunteers don’t just help, they shape futures,” says Dawn Kershaw, Volunteer Coordinator at Northorpe Hall. “By building confidence and offering consistent support, they help young people see what’s possible for their future. Even a few hours of your time can make a lasting difference in a young person’s life, as well as your own.”

One of the key volunteering opportunities is the charity’s mentoring programme, which provides long-term support for young people aged 10–19 across Kirklees.

Unlike short-term interventions, mentoring relationships can last several months, allowing volunteers time to build trust, get to know each young person, and support them through challenges.

Volunteers report gaining leadership skills, personal growth, and a renewed sense of purpose, while young people benefit from boosted confidence, improved social skills, and a stronger belief in their own potential.

To encourage more people to get involved, Northorpe Hall Child + Family Trust is hosting a Volunteer Drive on Tuesday 27 January at its on-site event space, The Northorpe Barn. There are two opportunities to get involved: at 1pm and 6pm.

These events will include case studies from young people who have benefited from the programme, stories from mentors, details about the application process, and an opportunity to ask the Northorpe Hall team questions.

There will also be opportunities to sign up to support the charity in other ways, including site support, office help, marketing and visual content, and future trustee roles. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to invest time to help change lives!
