"When Anthony H Wilson died in August 2007, I knew the world would never be the same. Tony Wilson built the modern Manchester." Mike Garry
‘ST ANTHONY: AN ODE TO ANTHONY H WILSON', the touching tribute to Factory Records legend Tony Wilson, has turned 10 years old.
To mark this special anniversary, its creators, Mancunian poet MIKE GARRY, and acclaimed music composer JOE DUDDELL (New Order, Elbow), will be hosting a special event at Piccadilly Records on Oldham Street.
Appearing in the legendary record shop on Saturday 23 August, the duo will be signing 100 original pressings of the highly collectible vinyl in-person and sharing stories about Tony and the release a decade on. All proceeds from the event will be donated to The Christie Charitable Fund.
Initially released in August 2015, ‘St Anthony…’ was released on Skinny Dog Records (the label of Guy Garvey and Pete Jobson) and featured artwork by the sensational Factory artist Peter Saville, plus a remix by the late, great Andrew Weatherall.
At its core, the track featured a poem written by local wordsmith Mike Garry about the life and work of Factory Records founder Tony Wilson. Taking his words to acclaimed music composer Joe Duddell (New Order, Elbow), Joe immediately heard elements of New Order’s “Your Silent Face” and used the seminal cut as a base to build something nostalgic and poignant, classic but fresh. The result was ‘St. Anthony: An Ode To Anthony H Wilson’.
The track was accompanied by an official video by Soup Collective, which featured close friends and collaborators of Wilson’s including Bernard, Gillian and Stephen from New Order, Steve Coogan, Christopher Eccleston, Iggy Pop, Peter Saville, and many more.
Anthony H. Wilson launched Factory Records in 1978 and he went on to establish the label by signing the likes of Joy Division, New Order, and The Happy Mondays. He became known as “Mr Manchester” for his work throughout his career promoting the city. He was immortalised on film by Steve Coogan in 2003’s 24 Hour Party People and again in the Joy Division biopic Control, this time played by Craig Parkinson. After a long struggle with cancer, Tony Wilson died in 2007 in Manchester’s Christie Cancer Hospital. All profits from the single will go to The Christie Charitable Fund.
100 original pressings of the highly collectible ‘St. Anthony: An Ode To Anthony H Wilson’ 10” vinyl will be available for £100 per copy at Piccadilly Records on Saturday 23 August for one day only.
