After months of preparation, York Unlocked’s festival weekend is finally here, this Saturday and Sunday (27-28 September). Now in its 4th Year, the inspiring charity has worked hard to bring us over 50 buildings and places to visit all for FREE, including access to some rarely opened spaces, behind-the-scenes-tours, and the chance to satisfy our curiosity about what lies behind the doors we walk past every day.
York is a thriving city, filled with many historical buildings, architectural variety, from medieval to modern contemporary design. Pre-booked tickets went fast and are now sold out, but many, many more buildings are simply drop in during their opening times over the weekend. The programme highlights all the available buildings and when they will be open.
A few of the buildings that are FREE to “drop in” during the weekend with no tickets required (check programme for times), include:
• Holgate Windmill
• The Hospitium
• Fishergate Postern Tower
• Herbert House
• Assembly Rooms
• PICA Studios
• Merchant Taylors’ Hall
• St Saviourgate Masonic Hall
• St Denys Church
• Thin Ice Press
• Bedern Hall
• St Anthonys Garden
• York Railway Institute
• .... and many, many more
“York Unlocked is all about discovery,” said Steve Morgan, Project Lead. “It is a chance for everyone to be nosy and step inside buildings they might pass every day but never enter, and to appreciate the wonderful architecture that York has to offer.”
To help plan your visit you can download a free programme from the website, download the York Unlocked App for maps and directions or pick up a hard copy programme free from local libraries.
York Unlocked is a registered charity. The festival is only possible thanks to over 60 volunteers, the generosity of building owners opening their doors, developers sharing their plans for York’s future, public donations, funders, sponsors and the dedication of the core team working behind the scenes. Together, they make this unique festival weekend FREE to both residents and visitors.
